Position: Lead Certified Athletic Trainer
Location: Joint Base San Antonio, Camp Bullis
Overview: The Lead Certified Athletic Trainer will perform the duties and responsibilities of a Certified Athletic Trainer. The LAT will oversee, evaluate, manage, and advise a team of Athletic Trainers. The contractor will also care for SW students to assist recovery from injury, avoid injury, or maintain peak physical fitness. The contractor shall provide administrative supervision of the LAT and the LAT shall align clinical care and rehabilitation plans with the standards established by the SW-OMS sports medicine physician.
Qualifications:
- Degree/Education: Possess a Master’s degree in an appropriate sports/medical science field.
- BLS
- Experience: Have minimum of five (5) years as a Certified Athletic Trainer – Collegiate level or higher
- Board Certification:
2. Obtain one of the following certifications and/or certificates within one hundred twenty (120) days and maintain currency accordingly (if applicable): National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) certified personal trainer (CPT) or higher; EXOS Performance Specialist or higher, or
National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) or Certified Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES)
3. If not already qualified, must be able to obtain and maintain all of the following within 4-months of hire date at SW HPSG: Certified in Functional Movement Screening (FMS); Certified in Graston Techniques (GT) or Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilizations; Certified in Kinesio Taping Practitioner; Dry needling certification.
Licensure/Registration:
1. State of Texas license to practice or able to obtain a Texas license within four
(4) months of contract employment – maintained during employment.
Duties:
1. Develop Standard Operating Procedures for continuity amongst team of Athletic Trainers and coordinate with other subject matter experts and staff members (i.e., physicians, sports medicine provider, athletic trainers, physical therapists, operational psychologists, strength coaches, etc.) for cross-discipline communication.
2. Conduct an initial assessment of a student’s injury or illness to provide emergency or continued care, and to determine whether they should be referred to physicians or physical therapists for further treatment.
3. Care for student injuries using athletic training equipment, techniques, and medication.
4. Evaluate student's readiness to return to training and provide participation clearances when necessary and warranted.
5. Apply protective or injury preventive devices such as tape, bandages, or braces to body parts such as ankles, fingers, or wrists.
6. Collaborate with other staff members within the organization, such as physicians and physical therapists to develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for student injuries.
7. Advise athletes on the proper use of equipment.
8. Plan and implement comprehensive student injury and illness prevention programs.
9. Supervise and conduct physical training programs with consideration to individual injuries.
10. Develop training programs and routines designed to improve student performance.
11. Maintain cleanliness and general upkeep of training facility to include, but not limited to, medical and fitness equipment.
12. Organize and establish general rules of conduct for the training room facility.
13. Recommend any changes to leadership regarding all athletic training supplies and equipment used at the SWTW Courses.
14. Use electronic health records to document injuries, method of treatment, rehabilitation, and medical releases. During normal operations, provide relevant information to SW medical staff to support the students’ medical needs.
15. Keep the training staff informed daily, and more frequently as situations dictate, of all students treated by the AT staff.
16. Provide a weekly summary report (non -PII) to the respective training staff leadership on all treatments and activities conducted by the AT staff, including all coordination, planning and activities with non-HPSG personnel. This may be accomplished through inputs into the Human Performance Utilization Tracker (HPUT) or similar database.
17. Work a non-standard schedule, extended hours, and/or rotating shifts which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. The Contractor shall be flexible and may need to deviate from the typical work week schedule.
18. The work requires some physical exertion, such as walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces as well as time spent outdoors in extreme temperatures and variable weather conditions. Work can require prolonged standing indoors or outdoors, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Incumbent is required to maintain strength, coordination, and stamina to manage and operate exercise and medical equipment. The incumbent’s physical conditioning must be sufficient to demonstrate and perform various exercise procedures and the ability to perform under stress, including lifting heavy weights potentially up to 100 lbs., squatting, sitting, running, jumping, bending, walking, crawling (low/high profile) for up to 25 meters, and prolonged standing. The position requires ability to move over, around, and through obstacles to a height of 10 feet, and up to 1.5 mile over rough terrain in extreme temperatures.
19. Visits or extended duties in these locations or sites are necessary to observe performance/events, to survey, to conduct planning, etcetera to ensure mission accomplishment. Some agility and strength may be required in executing medical coverage in these operational environments.
20. Work may require travel away from the normal duty station in order to support training requirements.
21. Diligently and accurately captures and enters all required data into Government-approved systems (e.g., MHS Genesis, HPUT) in support of clinical care, operational reporting, and Government-led research initiatives.
